Breast Thermography For Women Over 40

If you’re in your 20s or 30s, breast health may be something you know is important—but it may not be something you think about very often.

For many average-risk women, routine mammography doesn’t begin until age 40. So what does being proactive about breast health look like before then, and where does adjunctive breast thermography fit into that picture?

Breast Health Awareness Can Begin Before 40

One thing I wish more young women understood is that you don’t have to wait until 40 to start learning about your breasts.

Current U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidance recommends mammography every two years for average-risk women ages 40 through 74. Women with higher-than-average risk may need a different plan or earlier established imaging based on their personal and family history and the guidance of their healthcare professional.

Breast cancer is much less common in younger women than in older women, but younger does not mean zero risk. American Cancer Society estimates for 2024 included approximately 13,180 invasive breast cancer diagnoses among U.S. women younger than 40, representing about 4% of invasive breast cancer cases.

That statistic isn’t meant to scare anyone. Quite the opposite.

I think it’s a good reminder that breast health awareness shouldn’t suddenly begin on your 40th birthday.

Your 20s and 30s can be a time to learn what is normal for your own body, become familiar with your personal and family risk factors, pay attention to changes, and establish healthy habits around breast awareness.

For some women, adjunctive breast thermography is one additional piece of that broader breast-health picture.

The Role of Adjunctive Breast Thermography

Adjunctive breast thermography is a noncontact form of infrared imaging.

The camera doesn’t look through the breast or create an anatomical picture like mammography, ultrasound, or MRI. Instead, it passively records infrared energy emitted from the skin and converts that information into a visual map of skin surface temperature patterns.

During adjunctive breast thermography, there is:

  • No breast compression during image capture

  • No physical contact from the camera

  • No ionizing radiation used to create the images

The Med-Hot infrared imaging system used by Body in Focus is FDA cleared for adjunctive use to measure and record skin temperature patterns.

That word adjunctive is important.

It means the information is additional. Adjunctive breast thermography is not a stand-alone breast cancer screening test, and it does not replace mammography, ultrasound, MRI, laboratory testing, clinical examination, or medical care.

A thermogram also cannot determine why a particular temperature pattern exists.

Creating Awareness Without Trying to Diagnose Yourself

This is the part of breast thermography that I find especially valuable from an educational perspective.

A thermal image gives you an opportunity to become more aware of your body—but awareness and diagnosis are two very different things.

Skin temperature can be influenced by many factors, including blood flow near the skin, physical activity, environmental temperature, hormones, recent treatments, injury, topical products, and normal individual variation.

That’s also why preparation and a standardized imaging environment matter so much.

When I work with women, I like the conversation around breast health to extend beyond simply looking at colors on a thermogram.

It can become a reminder to think about the bigger picture:

Know your normal.
Become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so you’re more likely to recognize a new or persistent change.

Learn your personal risk.
Family history, genetics, age, breast density, previous medical history, and other factors can affect breast cancer risk. Those conversations belong with a qualified healthcare professional.

Pay attention to your everyday habits.
Exercise, heat, pressure, topical products, massage and lymphatic work, hormonal factors, and other everyday variables can influence skin surface temperature. Noticing those relationships can help you better understand why standardized preparation matters when thermal images are compared.

Keep appropriate medical care in the picture.
Being wellness-minded doesn’t mean choosing one tool over another. It means knowing what each tool can—and cannot—tell you.

For me, that’s a much healthier way to think about being proactive.

Building a Personal Baseline Over Time

One reason some younger women are interested in adjunctive breast thermography is the ability to document skin surface temperature patterns and compare images taken at different times.

When images are captured under sufficiently consistent conditions, later images can be compared with earlier ones.

But a baseline thermogram should never be thought of as proof that your breasts are healthy or disease-free.

A normal-appearing thermogram cannot rule out breast cancer or another condition. Likewise, a change in a thermal pattern does not tell us what caused that change.

Instead, think of a thermogram as another piece of information in your personal health record.

That’s an important distinction.

My goal isn’t for a woman to look at her thermal images and start diagnosing herself. I would much rather see her become more comfortable asking questions, understanding her own history, keeping recommended appointments, and communicating changes to her healthcare provider.

The Limitations Matter

Adjunctive breast thermography has very real limitations, and I believe you should understand them before deciding whether it’s something you want to include in your wellness routine.

Adjunctive breast thermography cannot diagnose breast cancer or rule it out.

It cannot determine the cause of an unusual temperature pattern.

It does not replace mammography, ultrasound, MRI, laboratory testing, clinical examination, biopsy, or medical care.

And it should never delay medical evaluation.

If you notice a new lump, nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin dimpling or thickening, persistent focal breast change, unexplained redness, swelling, persistent pain, or another new or concerning symptom, contact an appropriate healthcare professional. Don’t wait for a thermography appointment to have a symptom evaluated.

The FDA recognizes cleared breast thermography devices for adjunctive use only. Research into breast thermography continues, but current evidence does not establish it as a stand-alone breast cancer screening method.

That remains true whether you’re 28, 38, or 68.
