Can Thermography Show Inflammation?

When someone sees a warmer area on a thermogram, it’s natural to wonder, “Does that mean inflammation?”
Not necessarily. But that thermal pattern can still be meaningful information to observe, interpret, and consider in the right context.
Introduction
Thermography records infrared energy emitted from the skin and creates a visual map of skin surface temperature patterns. It can show areas that are warmer, cooler, or different from surrounding or corresponding areas.
Because inflammation can be associated with changes in temperature, thermography has been studied as a complementary way to document thermal patterns in certain areas of the body, including painful or injured areas and joints.
But there is an important distinction: thermography cannot confirm inflammation or determine its cause by itself.
So if thermography doesn’t diagnose, what does your report actually tell you?
That is an important question—and one I think deserves a better answer than simply saying, “It doesn’t diagnose.”
Your thermogram gives you a documented pattern. Your report provides interpretation and context for the thermal observations. That information can become one additional piece of information to consider alongside your health history, symptoms, clinical evaluation, and other appropriate medical testing.
What Thermography Actually Measures
A thermogram is a map of surface temperature, not a picture of what’s happening inside the body.
The infrared camera detects infrared energy emitted from the skin and converts that information into a visual representation of temperature.
Your images can document things such as:
Surface temperature distribution
Warmer or cooler areas
Differences between corresponding areas
Thermal asymmetry
Patterns that can be compared with future images when imaging conditions are sufficiently consistent
Think of it like a weather map.
A weather map can tell you where temperatures are different. It can show you patterns that are worth paying attention to.
But the map itself doesn’t necessarily tell you why the temperature is different.
The same principle applies to thermography.
A warmer area is a thermal observation. It is not automatically inflammation, injury, infection, or another medical condition.
What Your Thermography Report Actually Tells You
This is the part I really want people to understand.
Your appointment doesn’t end with someone handing you a colorful image and saying, “Here you go!”
Your images go through a review process, and your report describes the thermal observations and provides interpretation and context within the appropriate scope of thermography.
So when you receive your report, the goal isn’t for it to tell you:
“You have X.”
Instead, it helps describe:
What pattern was observed?
Where was the pattern observed?
Was there a temperature difference or asymmetry worth noting?
What does the thermal pattern look like in the context of the images?
Is there something that may be appropriate to discuss with your healthcare professional?
And when appropriate, consistent follow-up imaging can allow thermal patterns to be compared over time.
That’s an important distinction.
A thermal pattern is an observation—not a diagnosis.
But an observation is not the same thing as meaningless information.
What Inflammation Has to Do With Temperature
Inflammation is one reason researchers have been interested in thermography.
Inflammatory processes can be associated with changes in local blood flow and temperature. Because thermography records skin surface temperature, researchers have explored whether thermal patterns may provide useful information in specific clinical situations.
Research involving pain, joint inflammation, rheumatology, and musculoskeletal concerns has found associations between altered temperature patterns and certain clinical findings.
At the same time, the evidence isn’t consistent enough to say that a particular thermal pattern confirms inflammation.
Temperature can be influenced by many factors, including:
Blood flow near the skin
Physical activity
Environmental temperature
Hormonal factors
Medications
Sweating
Recent treatment or bodywork
Injury
Individual vascular differences
That’s why a warm area on a thermogram should not automatically be labeled “inflammation.”
The more accurate way to describe it is that thermography may document a surface temperature pattern that could be considered in the appropriate clinical context.
That distinction protects the meaning of the image.
And honestly, I think it makes the information more useful—not less.
Why Patterns and Context Matter
One of the most important things about thermography is that the image doesn’t exist in isolation.
Your thermal pattern is one piece of information.
Your health history is another.
Your symptoms, if you have them, are another.
Your clinical examination and appropriate medical testing provide additional information.
Thermography doesn’t replace those things. Instead, its role is to document the surface temperature pattern so that it can be interpreted and considered alongside the bigger picture.
This is especially important because the same thermal observation can have more than one possible contributor.
For example, a warmer region doesn’t automatically tell us whether the difference is related to inflammation, recent activity, environmental exposure, treatment, or another factor.
That’s why context matters.
Why Preparation Matters
If we’re going to document skin temperature patterns, we want to reduce avoidable influences on those temperatures as much as possible.
Exercise, massage, lymphatic work, physical therapy, hot or cold exposure, topical products, environmental temperature, and other factors can temporarily change skin temperature.
That’s why following the preparation instructions before your appointment matters.
It isn’t about making the thermogram “more diagnostic.”
It is about creating standardized conditions so the thermal images are as consistent and comparable as possible.
This becomes particularly important if you’re having follow-up imaging.
When images are captured under sufficiently consistent conditions, patterns can be compared over time.
That comparison can document whether a thermal pattern appears stable or changed.
It does not prove that a disease has improved, worsened, appeared, or disappeared.
It documents a change—or lack of change—in the surface temperature pattern.
The Limitations Matter
I believe the limitations are just as important as the possibilities.
Thermography cannot determine the cause of a thermal pattern by itself.
It cannot diagnose inflammation, infection, arthritis, autoimmune disease, cancer, thyroid disease, hormone imbalance, or another medical condition.
It also does not replace mammography, ultrasound, MRI, laboratory testing, clinical examination, or medical care.
And a normal thermogram cannot rule disease in or out.
If you have a new, persistent, or concerning symptom—including a lump, pain, swelling, discharge, skin change, or another significant change—please speak with an appropriate healthcare professional. Thermography should never be used to delay evaluation of a concerning symptom.
Breast thermography has an additional boundary
Breast thermography is adjunctive only.
It does not replace mammography, ultrasound, MRI, clinical examination, laboratory testing, biopsy, or other medically recommended care.
A normal breast thermogram cannot rule out breast cancer, and an unusual thermal pattern cannot confirm it.

It means observing and documenting skin surface temperature patterns and having additional information to bring into a larger conversation about your health.
Your thermogram can give you something to look at.
Your report can help you understand the thermal observations.
It may give you questions to ask.
And when appropriate, consistent follow-up imaging can give you a way to compare documented thermal patterns over time.
That doesn’t make the thermogram a diagnosis.
It makes it additional information.
And that’s the messaging shift I want women to understand.
Thermography isn’t diagnostic.
But it isn’t meaningless.
It’s a way of documenting a real physiological signal at the skin surface.
The important part is understanding what that signal can—and cannot—tell you.
